MY HEAVENLY ANGEL, The Cherokees, United Artists #367 1961
Flipside: BED BUG – Here’s another really great uncharted, uptempo song from my music collection. The Cherokees hailed from New Haven, Connecticut. Group members were Marshall Lassiter (lead), Bobby Bowdon, Dickie Arnold, Count Hopkins and Fred Parris who co-wrote “MY HEAVENLY ANGEL.” Fred Parris is only playing the chimes in the background of this recording, not singing!
Where do I begin with Fred Parris WOW! So many things to write about: his early days recording as The Scarlets to his signature song “IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT” with his Five Satins, really too much to cover in this upload so I thought I’d share this story.
Fred Parris is a dear and close friend. He and The Five Satins performed in my very first show that I produced at Harrah’s Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey on March 17, 1982. The Late Tim Hauser (Manhattan Transfer) co-hosted the show with me. It was the very first, doowop, oldies, rock ‘n’ roll show ever to be held in Atlantic City since Casino gambling started there in 1978.
Opening the show was “Frankie Lymon’s Teenagers” with Pearl Mckinnon singing lead, The Del-Vikings with Clarence Quick, an acappella group from New Jersey, Solid Gold, The Impalas with the late Joe “Speedo” Frazier and of course, Fred Parris and The Five Satins. I can only say, it was a very special evening 37 years ago and the memories are everlasting! Fred Parris and The Five Satins would go on to perform in many more of my shows that I produced through the 1980’s and 1990’s.
Some other friends I’ve produced in shows that I also brought to the Atlantic City Casino showrooms in my 37 years in the music business are Little Anthony/Imperials, The Flamingos, Ben E. King, Lloyd Price, Davy Jones (Monkees) Lesley Gore, Lou Christie, The Skyliners, The Duprees, The Cadillacs (Earl Carroll), The Platters, The Original Diamonds (David Somerville), The Tokens, The Dubs, The Four Lads, The Four Aces, Jerry Butler, Pat Boone, Johnny Maestro/Brooklyn Bridge, Melba Moore, Freda Payne, Percy Sledge, Gene Chandler, Bobby Rydell, The Elegants, The Drifters, The Capris, Lenny Cocco/Chimes, Earl Lewis/Channels, just too many more to list. They are all very special people who I feel very fortunate to have met! “GREAT MEMORIES!”
Enjoy this really great uptempo song “MY HEAVENLY ANGEL” with Marshall Lassiter singing lead. A real “GEM” from Fred Parris!
